Wondering where the name Achim comes from? The town’s history stretches back to Saxon courts in the 11th century. Achim sits 16 km southeast of Bremen. It is a municipality and the largest town in the district of Verden.

Achim’s story is one of resilience. Danes, Swedes and French all controlled the region at various times. In the 19th century, Achim became part of the Kingdom of Hanover.

Let’s delve deeper into Achim’s past. The first recorded mention of Achim was in 1091 as Arahem. This area was a meeting place for old Saxon courts. They met three times each year in Achim.

Imagine Achim in the 12th century. Christian missionaries built a baptismal church here. This church was the predecessor to St. Laurentius Church. The St. Laurentius Church was built in 1257.

The War on Lunenburgian Succession had consequences. Achim was set on fire in 1381. This was due to fighting between Duke Albrecht and Prince-Archbishop Albert II.

From 1626, Danes and Swedes controlled Achim alternately. Later, the Duchy of Bremen ruled Achim. There was a brief Danish occupation. The House of Hanover took over from 1715. France controlled Achim during the Seven Years’ War. Achim became the capital of a canton within the Département des Bouches-du-Weser.

The train station has been in Achim since 1847. The track runs between Bremen and Hannover. This shows Achim’s growing importance.

Today, Achim is home to international companies. These include Vitakraft and Desma shoe machines. Mercedes-Benz, Coca-Cola and Amazon also have offices here.

Achim is more than just a historical place. It’s a thriving town with a rich past. It is a place where history and modernity meet. Take a moment to appreciate Achim’s story. It is a story of survival. It is a story of growth. It is a story still being written.
