The Grant Street Theatre is a multi-purpose performance space, a vital part of the vibrant arts scene in Melbourne. Once an old police drill hall, it was renovated in 2013 and became the home to the students and faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. The theatre was completely transformed by Six Degrees Architects. It has seen a rich history of student performances in its capacity as a purpose-built drama theatre. Today, it has a modern, sleek design that is a far cry from its earlier incarnation. Its flexible configuration allows it to host a vast array of events, from cabaret to contemporary music, offering a stage for budding talents. The theatre can be configured as a bar and lounge, ideal for intimate gatherings, or as a 120-seater theatre, providing an intimate and engaging experience for audiences. But the theatre’s story goes beyond the stage. A new addition to the space in 2013, was Lionel’s, a welcoming cafe, bar, and lounge space, named after the generous philanthropist, Lionel Gell. His portrait, painted by his friend Dora McRae, looks down upon the space, a silent testament to his enduring legacy.
