You might be expecting a story about Brookfield Zoo, but our story is a stroll through the history of the town itself. Imagine a small, quaint village in the early 1900s. It was originally called Grossdale, a name bestowed by the Chicago lawyer and real estate mogul, Samuel Gross. He envisioned lush green spaces, spacious lots, and vibrant community life. It was a place where working-class families could escape the claustrophobic city and build their American dream. But like many dreams, this one took an unexpected turn.

As time passed, the residents of Grossdale found themselves growing increasingly weary of the strong presence of Samuel Gross. His personal life and fortune took a downturn, and the residents chaffed under his firm leadership. They felt the need to break free from Gross’s influence, and in 1905, a contest to choose a new name was held. From the many suggestions, “Brookfield” emerged, a name inspired by Salt Creek, the natural waterway that flowed through the area. This change marked a new chapter, a move away from Gross’s shadow and towards a new, independent future.

There’s a certain charming incongruity in the name Brookfield. It conjures up images of a serene landscape, with babbling brooks and lush vegetation. Yet, the town’s origins are intertwined with the raw energy of the 19th century. The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad, a vital artery of transportation, traversed the area and played a pivotal role in the development of the town. This convergence of peaceful nature and bustling commerce shaped the early development.

In the 1920s, when automobiles became more widespread, Ogden Avenue, formerly called the Plank Toll Road, was paved. The town began reaping the benefits of improved accessibility, attracting new residents and businesses. The year 1934 marked another milestone with the opening of the Chicago Zoological Park, better known as the Brookfield Zoo. This was a turning point in the history of Brookfield.

As you stand here, gazing at the modern-day Brookfield, it is hard to imagine the town’s humble origins. From the early days of a land developer’s ambitions to a vibrant, modern town, Brookfield’s story is woven with passion, change, and a spirit of community. You’ll witness this vibrant spirit walking through the heart of the town, as you explore the remnants of its history.
