What if cameras could talk? Right here, in front of Galleri Image, we find ourselves at Scandinavia’s first gallery dedicated to photography. Founded in Aarhus in 1977, Galleri Image was a trailblazer. It championed photography as a vital art form.

For years, Galleri Image was Denmark’s only space solely for photographic art. The gallery broadened its scope over time. It now embraces diverse art forms using cameras and photographic techniques. Think video, installation, and computer art. Galleri Image disseminates camera-based art through exhibitions.

Each year, Galleri Image presents five to six solo or group exhibitions. These feature both Danish and international artists. The gallery has showcased many groundbreaking talents. Legendary artists have graced Galleri Image with their work. Diane Arbus and Duane Michaels are among them. August Sander and Imogen Cunningham have also exhibited here. Galleri Image actively participates in various networks. It is a member of The Danish Association of Art Centres. In Scandinavia, it co-founded the Nordic Photography Network. It is also part of PARALLEL. This European Photo Based Platform strengthens cooperation in the European photo art world.

The American photographer Fred Licht founded Galleri Image. Carsten Langkilde’s exhibition marked the gallery’s debut in November 1977.

Galleri Image has occupied several locations since its inception. It has been at Vestergade 29 since 2002.
