Perhaps you’ve noticed the subtle shift in atmosphere. Right here stands Casa da Misericórdia. It is the physical headquarters for the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. This eclesial movement resides within the Santa Cruz Vicariate. It is part of the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro.

Let’s delve into the story of this place. The Santa Cruz Vicariate is an important part of the larger Archdiocese. Itself rich with history. The vicariate’s creation in 2015 marked a significant change. It was originally part of the Episcopal Vicariate West. The Reverent Father Jorge Pereira Bispo was its first Episcopal Vicar.

Over time the Archdiocese adapted to better serve its people. In January 2021 the Episcopal Vicariate of Campo Grande was created. It was separated from the Santa Cruz Vicariate. The Reverent Father Luiz Carlos Pereira became its first Episcopal Vicar. Currently the Episcopal Vicar of the Vicariate Santa Cruz is the Reverent Father Rodrigo Vieira da Silva.

The Casa da Misericórdia plays a vital role. It supports the Santa Cruz Vicariate. This vicariate is divided into four districts. These districts contain 14 parishes.

The vicariate’s story is deeply entwined with the history of Santa Cruz. The area has changed hands over the centuries. It was once inhabited by the Tupi-Guarani people.

The Portuguese colonists arrived. Cristovão Monteiro received the land. He was rewarded for his service against the French. He built a sugar mill and chapel.

Monteiro’s wife donated the land to the priests of the Companhia de Jesus. The priests combined these lands. They marked it with a large wooden cross. This cross became the Holy Cross.

The Finance from Santa Cruz was powerful. It was the most developed in the Captaincy of Rio de Janeiro. It had thousands of slaves. It also had livestock. The area grew various types of crops. These were managed with advanced techniques.

The Jesuits were expelled in 1759. The assets of the Companhia de Jesus reverted to the Crown. The farm became a vacation spot for the Royal Family.

The Royal Family felt comfortable in Santa Cruz. The Prince Regent prolonged his stay. Princes Don Pedro and Dom Miguel grew up there.

Dom Pedro I and Empress Leopoldina spent their honeymoon there. The Royal Palace became the Imperial Palace. Santa Cruz was the site of an important meeting. José Bonifácio and Dom Pedro established their plans for independence.

Princess Isabel signed a law in Santa Cruz. This law gave freedom to the slaves of the Imperial Government. Santa Cruz was the first place to have home delivery of letters. It was chosen for the first telephone line in South America.

After the Republic was proclaimed Santa Cruz lost prestige. Foreign immigrants were attracted to it. They contributed to the economy.

Today Santa Cruz is growing rapidly. It has a well-developed trade sector. It has several banks and diverse shops.

The Casa da Misericórdia stands as a testament to faith. It is a place of renewal within a vicariate rich in history. It continues to serve its community. It stands as a beacon. It reflects the area’s past and present.
