Have you ever pondered the age of a building? Take St. Sylvester. It stands before us as a testament to time. The oldest parts of this church, the sturdy, square tower base, date back to the 1200s. That’s almost a millennium of history whispering within these walls!

St. Sylvester started its life as a humble village church. It wasn’t even dedicated to St. Sylvester originally! It was dedicated to John the Baptist. Over time, as Schwabing, once a quiet village, grew into the bustling district it is today, St. Sylvester grew with it.

The church underwent a significant transformation in the 17th century, receiving a Baroque makeover. Imagine the medieval walls adorned with intricate stuccowork and the nave reaching for the heavens. Later, during the rapid expansion of Schwabing in the 19th century, the congregation needed more space. A new church dedicated to St. Ursula was built nearby.

This older church, with its rich history, was eventually rededicated to St. Sylvester in 1921. A beautiful blend of old and new, St. Sylvester stands as a symbol of enduring faith and the ever-evolving spirit of Munich.
