A legacy etched in stone. That’s Sri Ramar Temple. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with a woman. Ranee Dhoby. A title. A queen of the laundrymen. She held sway over the dhoby community. They settled along the Ayer Itam River in the early 1800s.

Sri Ramar Temple isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to Ranee’s generosity. She donated the land. This was sometime before 1872. A will from that year mentions the temple. The temple’s existence predates that date. The exact founding remains a mystery. The land grant from Sir George Leith in 1802 cemented her claim to the land. This was long before the temple was formally established. Sir George was the Governor of Prince of Wales Island. The land was in the Ayer Itam district.

Ranee was more than just a laundress. She was a shrewd businesswoman. She sold part of her land. This allowed William Edward Phillips access to Francis Light’s estate. Suffolk House now stands on that land. But her legacy lies here. At Sri Ramar Temple. It’s a Vaishnavite temple. Vishnu and his avatars are worshipped here. It’s one of only two such temples in Penang.

The temple wasn’t always as magnificent as it is today. Renovations in 1982 brought in new deities. Rama Sita Hanuman and Ganesh now reside within its walls. A memorial honors Ranee Dhoby. The inner sanctum retains its original octagonal design. A multi-purpose hall. The Kalyana Mandabam. It was completed in 2005. Dato Dr K Rajapathy officiated. He was chairman of the Penang Hindu Endowment Board.

The gopuram. The temple tower. It’s adorned with Hanuman and other Hindu deities. The temple’s history is rich and complex. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of a woman known as Ranee Dhoby. Sri Ramar Temple. It is a silent observer of Penang’s history. It continues to serve the community. It stands as a symbol of devotion. It offers a glimpse into the past. Come. Experience the serenity and the stories it holds.
