“Did the horses from the nearby racetrack actually parade through here?” one tourist asked, pointing down the narrow passageway. Our journey today takes us to the Passage de Clichy, a hidden gem tucked away in the heart of Paris. The Passage de Clichy is steeped in history. Its origins date back to the early 19th century, a time when Paris was undergoing rapid transformation. The earliest record of Passage de Clichy’s official name in Parisian records goes back to November 10, 1873. It’s more than just a passageway; it’s a microcosm of the city’s evolution. Initially, the Passage de Clichy was a haven for horses from the nearby Hippodrome de Montmartre racecourse. Imagine the clatter of hooves and the excited chatter of spectators as these elegant creatures made their way through this very passage. The Hippodrome itself was a marvel, built for the 1900 World’s Fair. It replaced two former racetracks, those of Alma and Champ-de-Mars, showcasing Paris’s ambition and modernity.

The construction of the Hippodrome dramatically altered the landscape of the area. The last remaining village houses were demolished, replaced by the grand structure of the racecourse. It was a sign of the times, as the city embraced progress and left behind its rural past. The Hippodrome eventually evolved into a circus venue, before undergoing a complete makeover in 1911. It was transformed into the Gaumont Palace, which became the world’s largest cinema. This historical landmark would stand until 1973, when it, too, made way for progress, replaced by a Castorama store and a Mercure hotel. Today, the Passage de Clichy offers a glimpse into a bygone era. It’s a place where the rhythm of life slows down, where the echoes of history whisper through the cobblestones. It’s a reminder that even in a city as dynamic as Paris, there are still pockets of tranquility and charm waiting to be discovered.
