Hidden within the quiet landscape of Ismaning stands Eremitage St Koloman. This unassuming chapel holds a story. It’s a tale of faith community and resilience. Eremitage St Koloman wasn’t always here. After World War II Fischerhauser a nearby village grew rapidly. Around 300 people lived there. Catholic families had to travel four kilometers to church. This was a considerable journey. So in 1950 they formed a building committee. Their aim was simple. To build a church for their community. Eremitage St Koloman was their answer.

The foundation stone was laid in May 1952. The chapel was dedicated in September of the same year. Saint Koloman was chosen as the patron saint. Eremitage St Koloman’s architecture is simple. The facade is made of grey fieldstone. The only feature is a round arched portal. The interior is whitewashed. Colorful round arched windows illuminate the single nave. A flat wooden ceiling and a gallery dominate the entrance area.

Inside Eremitage St Koloman you’ll find a collection of art. These aren’t original pieces. They are from Ismaning churches. These artworks were removed from their previous homes. This includes a late Gothic statue of Saint Koloman. He’s dressed as a pilgrim. There is also a 14th century Gothic statue of Saint Leonard and a Baroque statue of Saint Nepomuk. A restored wooden cross dating back 50 years is mounted on the back wall of the choir. A depiction of the Baptism of Jesus from the 17th century hangs in the northwest corner. A heart of Jesus image from the late 18th century is above the sacristy.

Even a Baroque statue of Mary and the Christ Child found its way to Eremitage St Koloman. It was originally part of a bee house. A local resident recognized its value. He purchased it donating the piece to the chapel. The chapel’s bronze bells are noteworthy. Cast in 1953 by Karl Czudnochowsky of Erding these bells ring out their unique tones.

Eremitage St Koloman is more than just a building. It represents the faith and community of Fischerhauser. It is a testament to their perseverance and their desire for a place of worship. This small chapel in Ismaning has a big story to tell. A story of faith community and dedication. A story waiting for you to discover.
