The Lawrence Avenue Bridge, completed in 1928, was originally designed with elegance and grace in mind. This bridge, believe it or not, was once clad in limestone! Imagine, if you will, intricate stonework covering the entire structure. This wasn’t just any plain limestone either. The design incorporated both Art Deco and Gothic Revival details, giving the bridge a unique and striking aesthetic. Sadly, time and perhaps budget constraints have not been kind to the Lawrence Avenue Bridge. The limestone adornments were removed, leaving behind the bare concrete structure we see today. Despite this loss, it’s still fascinating to picture the bridge in its former glory. What we see now is merely a shadow of its former self, stripped of its grandeur.
