Imagine stepping into a retail paradise. This is Rødovre Centrum. It is more than just a shopping center. It’s a mixed-use development in Rødovre. This vibrant suburb lies west of Copenhagen.

Rødovre Centrum boasts a total area of 150000 square meters. 44000 square meters of this is retail space. You will find over a hundred shops here. The center includes a Føtex supermarket. It also includes a Magasin du Nord. A cinema multiplex offers entertainment. A medical center caters to health needs. 70 apartments provide residences.

The story of Rødovre Centrum began in 1966. Gardener Aage Knudsen drew inspiration from American shopping malls. He created the first real shopping mall in Denmark. The center expanded later in 1975. Further expansions occurred in 1989, 2000, and 2003-2006. Jesper Andreassen, the founder’s grandson, became CEO in 1991.

In 2013, a new expansion added 14000 square meters. Hoffmann and Moe undertook this project.

Rødovre Centrum is next to Rødovre Town Hall. It sits at the corner of Tårnvej and Rødovre Parkvej. Besides the Magasin du Nord and Føtex, Hennes & Mauritz is also here. A multiplex cinema features five screens. A bowling center offers recreation. Many eateries provide dining options.

In 2018, another expansion added about 30 new shops. It also added 550 more parking spaces. That brought the total to 160 shops. There were 3250 parking spaces for cars. Around 1100 bicycle spaces were available. In 2017, sales of goods and services reached approximately 2.3 billion DKK.

Krystallen is a landmark at Rødovre Centrum. It is a glass-covered atrium bathed in natural light. The design harmonizes with the rest of the complex. The facade is clad with perforated sunshade panels. This adds architectural interest. It also creates a comfortable influx of light. Windows opening in the facade provide natural cooling. The focus is on allowing light rather than heat.

Rødovre Centrum plays an active role in Rødovre. The master plan ensures greater coherence. It connects the shopping center to its surroundings. The plan focuses on better parking. It improves infrastructure. More residential and retail units are included.

Following the extension, Rødovre Centrum has 160 shops. The project aimed to develop the center. The goal was to increase its attraction. It should be more than just a shopping center.

Rødovre Centrum is Denmark’s only family-owned shopping center. The families Knudsen and Andreasen have owned and operated it. Since its opening in 1966, Rødovre Centrum has had an active art policy. It includes works by Poul Hansen, Thilo Frank, and Poul Isbak. Bentemarie Kjeldbæk is also represented.

As you leave Rødovre Centrum, remember its history. It is a testament to innovation and community development. The center continues to evolve. It adapts to meet the changing needs of its visitors.
