Did two kings really get married in the same church? They did, right here at the Nagyboldogasszony-templom, better known as Matthias Church. This magnificent structure isn’t just a feast for the eyes; it’s a time capsule holding centuries of Hungarian history. Founded in 1015 by Hungary’s first king, Saint Stephen, the Nagyboldogasszony-templom has witnessed coronations, sieges, and even a miracle. Imagine, in 1686, during the siege of Buda, a cannonball struck the church, then being used as a mosque. The wall crumbled, revealing a hidden statue of the Virgin Mary. This “Marian Miracle” demoralized the occupying Ottoman forces, leading to Buda’s liberation. The Nagyboldogasszony-templom has worn many faces throughout its lifetime. It has been a Romanesque sanctuary, a grand Gothic hall church, a mosque under Ottoman rule, and a Baroque masterpiece after Buda’s recapture. The church we see today largely reflects the 19th-century restoration led by Frigyes Schulek. He unearthed Gothic elements while adding his own distinctive touches like the diamond-patterned roof tiles. These colorful tiles, produced by the renowned Zsolnay Manufacture, shimmer in the sunlight, a testament to Hungarian artistry. Look closely at the Mary Portal, the southwest entrance to the Nagyboldogasszony-templom. Its Gothic relief, meticulously reconstructed by Schulek, depicts the death of Mary, mother of Jesus. Inside, the vibrant frescoes by Bertalan Székely and Károly Lotz transport you back in time. The walls themselves whisper tales of King Matthias Corvinus, for whom the church is nicknamed. He held not one, but two weddings within these hallowed walls. The south gate, known as the Bride’s Gate, stands as a romantic reminder. The church’s rich history continues to resonate today. It houses the Ecclesiastical Art Museum, where you can admire sacred relics and replicas of Hungary’s royal treasures. The Nagyboldogasszony-templom stands as a symbol of resilience, a place where history, art, and faith intertwine. Its story echoes the spirit of Budapest itself, a city that has endured and emerged even more vibrant.
