Why dirt? That’s the question many ask upon learning about St. James’ Episcopal Church. You see, this sacred ground, this building of faith, didn’t just rise from ordinary earth. It sprouted from a tapestry of soils, each telling a story, a prayer, a hope. In 2006, long before the church’s walls graced this space, parishioners gathered. They cupped earth from their own homes, a symbolic gesture, a binding of lives to this sacred project. St. James’ Episcopal Church was more than bricks and mortar. It was a testament to a community built on inclusion, a stark contrast to its origins. In 1941, a small group of African Americans, many affiliated with Tillotson College, yearned for an Episcopal space where their presence wouldn’t be deemed a disruption. They were met with closed doors, a painful reminder of the segregated South. Yet, their spirit remained unbroken. They found an ally in Father John Epps, Dean of the Colored Convocation, who embarked on a train journey from Tyler to Austin, a pilgrimage of hope. With his guidance, “Church of the Advent” was born, first finding solace in homes, then in borrowed spaces. In 1947, they claimed the name St. James’ Episcopal Church, a beacon on East 7th Street. As their congregation blossomed, mirroring the spirit of their inclusive hearts, St. James’ Episcopal Church moved to East 19th Street. But the story doesn’t end there. This ever-evolving tapestry of faith found itself drawn to a larger haven, deeper into East Austin, where we stand now. And so, they poured not just dirt, but history into the foundation: dirt from the National Cathedral, black sand from Hawaii, holy soil from Chimayo, echoes of their past homes. St. James’ Episcopal Church embodies a legacy of resilience, its foundation a testament to faith, diversity and the enduring power of an open heart. Remember, the next time you feel the ground beneath your feet, it might just be whispering a story.
