“Forge Royale” an old sign whispered stories into the Parisian air. Today we stand on Rue de la Forge Royale in Paris’s 11th arrondissement. This street, though seemingly ordinary, holds layers of history within its 220 meters.

Rue de la Forge Royale owes its name to a former forge. It was known as “À la Forge Royale” so says the sign. Imagine the clang of hammers and the roar of the furnace. Kings once resided at the Palais des Tournelles. The forge supplied them. Its legacy echoes even now.

The street emerged around 1770. Verniquet’s 1789 map shows its early existence. Back then it was called “Passage de la Forge Royale” or “Cul-de-sac de la Forge Royale”. During the French Revolution, its name transformed to “Rue de Forge-Nationale”. The street reflected the fervor of a nation reborn.

In the 1970s, Rue de la Forge Royale buzzed with local commerce. Imagine Mademoiselle Touitou’s grocery store. Picture M. Levy’s jewelry shop sparkling in the sunlight. There was also M. Crombez selling bamboo lights. M. Morgentin worked as a tailor and Mr. Couture was a local upholsterer. M. Goldminc ran a butcher shop. Maria Adenis was a local baker.

A painted yellow facade remains at number 25. It bears the name of a bygone business. “MORSE RADIO” it declares in black and white. They repaired radios and washing machines. At number 4, a marble front hints at the past. “Ch. Grossman installateur” it reads. Once, this was the “Société Générale d’Alimentation Contre la Vie Chère” a butcher shop.

In 1997, a dark event stained Rue de la Forge Royale. Guy Georges, a serial killer, murdered his last victim at number 12. The street witnessed unspeakable horror.

Today, as we stroll along Rue de la Forge Royale, consider its contrasts. The echoes of royal craftsmanship. The energy of local commerce. Also, the shadow of a tragic crime. This street encapsulates the multifaceted character of Paris itself. As you leave Rue de la Forge Royale, remember its story. It is a story etched in stone, brick, and the collective memory of the city.
