Whispers from the past echo. They resonate here in Ebersheim. This borough of Mainz boasts a history stretching back centuries.

Ebersheim first appeared in written records in 764. A donation document connected it to Lorsch Monastery. Another record from 789 calls Ebersheim Aburinesheim. So, the exact naming origin remains a point of scholarly debate.

By 830, Ebersheim was labeled a “monk’s estate”. It belonged to the Abbey of St. Maximin near Trier. This wasn’t a first-time grant. The ownership change happened earlier.

The Ebersheim we know today is the most remote district of Mainz. It is also the highest. And interestingly, Ebersheim cultivates the most wine. Because of this location, Ebersheim serves as Mainz’s gateway to Rheinhessen.

Ebersheim remains largely rural today. This is despite joining Mainz in 1969. Its character blends old and new. Farmsteads and wineries mix with modern homes.

The distinct Rheinhessen lifestyle is palpable in Ebersheim. Cultural highlights include the Weinfest. Of course, there is also the Kerb.

Did you know Ebersheim’s phone area code differs from Mainz? It shares the 06136 code with Nieder-Olm.

Geographically, Ebersheim sits in an agricultural landscape. This landscape includes fields, orchards, and vineyards. Ebersheim lies on the slopes of the Mühlberg.

Archaeological finds trace human activity back to 2200 BC. A bell-shaped beaker marks this era. The “Langer Stein” hints at a menhir. This dates back to the Stone or Bronze Age. Bronze artifacts also confirm settlement.

Roman traces exist as well. The remains of a Villa rustica have been found. These date to the 2nd to 4th centuries AD.

A significant find from the Frankish period is a tombstone. The partial inscription mentions “lindis” and “Velandu”.

Around 1650, a manor house was constructed. It displayed the coat of arms of the Mainz Elector Johann Philipp von Schönborn. About 100 Ebersheim residents died in the plague year of 1666.

French soldiers occupied Ebersheim. This happened during the sieges of Mainz from 1794 to 1799. Many locals died from the diseases they brought.

In 1797, Ebersheim officially became French. Then, in 1816, Ebersheim became part of the province of Rheinhessen. It belonged to the Grand Duchy of Hesse.

The Ebersheim coat of arms features a silver fire grate on a red background. This symbol links to St. Lawrence. He was a patron saint of the local parish. Legend says he was martyred on a fire grate.

Today, Ebersheim thrives as a unique part of Mainz. Its rich past intertwines with its present identity. Come explore Ebersheim. Discover its beauty.
