A tragic event forever etched its mark. This is Rue du Président Carnot. We stand where history whispers tales of both triumph and tragedy. Rue du Président Carnot in Lyon isn’t just a street. It’s a living testament to a pivotal moment in French history. This street connects Place de la République and Pont Lafayette. It’s located in Lyon’s 2nd arrondissement.

Named in honor of President Sadi Carnot. His assassination on June 24 1894 profoundly impacted Lyon. The rue was named after him just a month later on July 24. The President was murdered a short distance away. The event took place near Rue de la République. This terrible incident occurred near the Palais de la Bourse. The location is marked by a red slab in the pavement.

But Rue du Président Carnot’s story goes deeper. It wasn’t simply a pre-existing road renamed. Construction started around 1890. This was part of a larger urban renewal project for the Grôlée neighborhood. This major project required the demolition of several buildings. Among them was a 19th-century pawnshop. It stood near the Church of Saint-Bonaventure. The project also eliminated several older streets. It fundamentally changed the layout of the area.

The street became the central axis of the new Grôlée district. The Grands Magasins des Cordeliers department store opened in 1895. It was located near Rue du Président Carnot. Galeries Lafayette took over the building in 1919. They expanded it in 1925. Since then many shops have occupied this important location.

The recent history of Rue du Président Carnot is one of urban renewal. In 2004 the city sold several buildings. They were sold to an American investment fund. The aim was to revitalize the area. The process was long and complex. It wasn’t until 2017-2018 that commercial projects began to come to fruition. Today you can see many shops and offices along Rue du Président Carnot. This street is a vibrant hub in Lyon. It represents resilience and renewal. Its story is one of change and the enduring spirit of the city. This street bears witness to both the tragic and the triumphant. It’s a must-see on any tour of Lyon. Remember the name Rue du Président Carnot. Remember the story it holds.
