“Welcome to Robbins Church of Christ” is more than just words. Robbins Church of Christ is a place to believe, belong, and become. It stands as a beacon of faith in Robbins Illinois.

Robbins itself has a rich history. It is the oldest majority-black suburb in the Chicago area. It is also one of the oldest incorporated black municipalities in the United States. Imagine the stories these streets could tell if they could talk.

The land where Robbins Church of Christ stands was once farmland. In 1910, real estate agents Henry and Eugene Robbins saw potential. They opened subdivisions marketed to African Americans. These lots were affordable costing as little as $90.

The people who settled here were hard working. They were predominantly working-class African Americans. They desired land and a home. Many were southerners seeking a better life. Robbins location near the Calumet region provided factory jobs. Women often worked in domestic service. They also did seasonal work canning vegetables.

Owning land allowed families to supplement their income. They grew gardens and raised small livestock. Many even built their own homes to save money. While some outsiders called it a slum, residents saw it as a compromise. It was a blend of North and South.

In 1917, Robbins took a bold step. Residents incorporated as a separate municipality. This was significant for a blue-collar community with limited funds. Thomas J. Kellar became the village’s first mayor. He noted that people came to Robbins. They sought freedom from city crowds. They wanted space for chickens and gardens.

After incorporation, Robbins became a popular spot. Black Chicagoans flocked here. They enjoyed picnics and nightclubs on summer weekends. Robbins Church of Christ provided spiritual nourishment. It became a vital part of this vibrant community.

Robbins Church of Christ is a fellowship of believers. They share the Good News through learning. They listen, pray, and work together. They actively reach out to their communities.

Today, Robbins Church of Christ continues this legacy. It embraces its role as a place to believe. People belong here and become the best versions of themselves. This church stands tall. It welcomes all who seek faith and community.
