Whispers of history linger here at GKI Kwitang. This isn’t just a church. It’s a living testament to Jakarta’s vibrant past. GKI Kwitang stands proudly a beacon of faith and resilience.
The GKI Kwitang’s story begins not in grand architecture but in a humble bamboo dwelling. In 1873 missionary E Haan arrived. He sought to spread the Gospel. His first church was a simple bamboo structure. It served as a modest house of worship.
The early years were a testament to community spirit. Donations from Ny R Rijks Nn Hofland and Ny Blankert helped build a small church. The first service was held on November 5 1876. Around 50 people attended. This humble beginning would blossom into something much larger.
GKI Kwitang wasn’t just for Dutch people. It welcomed Javanese Ambonese and Chinese congregants. The services were even held in both Dutch and Malay. The church’s inclusive nature is part of its identity. It reflects the diversity of Jakarta itself.
In 1886 Reverend Huysing took over. He oversaw the construction of a permanent church. He purchased land from a Chinese woman for 11500 guilders. The new building boasted Indische Empire Style architecture. It had a striking facade. Four tall Tuscan pillars supported a large central arched entrance.
The church wasn’t static. In 1921 architect FL Wiemans renovated GKI Kwitang. He incorporated Art Nouveau and Art Deco elements. Geometric ornaments and stained glass windows added elegance. The renovations respected the main hall’s original design. New additions included a consistory and additional space.
The church continued to adapt through tumultuous times. During the Indonesian Revolution the congregation dwindled. The Malay-speaking congregation even merged with another church. After independence many Dutch people returned to Europe. The GKI Kwitang persevered. It eventually transitioned from the Gereformeerde Kerk to the Gereja Kristen Indonesia.
Today GKI Kwitang remains a vibrant community hub. It covers a vast area 1913 square meters. It’s a cultural treasure. It’s recognized as a cultural heritage building. Its enduring spirit reflects the strength of its people. GKI Kwitang’s story is one of adaptability resilience and faith. It’s a story worth remembering. It’s a story you’ve experienced today.
