They called her Dona Vitória. A name whispered with respect a legend born from courage. Here before us stands Morro Dona Vitória a silent witness to her extraordinary tale.

Dona Vitória wasn’t a queen or a warrior. She was an ordinary woman living in an extraordinary place. In the early 2000s she lived in an apartment overlooking the Ladeira dos Tabajaras in Copacabana. This wasn’t just any street. It was a battleground a place where drug traffickers and corrupt police officers clashed.

Dona Vitória witnessed it all from her window. The brazen drug deals the armed men the children caught in the crossfire. She felt the fear of course but fear didn’t stop her. Instead she bought a camera.

For years she meticulously documented the illegal activities. She filmed the transactions the intimidation the open disregard for the law. These weren’t just random recordings. Dona Vitória’s voice is heard on the tapes. She comments on each scene with a mix of outrage and determination. Her voice a testament to her bravery.

Her recordings weren’t intended for public display. They were initially part of a lawsuit against the state. Dona Vitória’s property had lost value due to the rampant drug trade. A police colonel claimed she was lying about the extent of the problem. Her videos proved him wrong.

The evidence she provided was irrefutable. More than 30 people including traffickers and corrupt police officers were arrested. Her actions helped dismantle a large drug operation. Her name Dona Vitória became synonymous with bravery and civic duty.

After the arrests Dona Vitória was forced into hiding for her safety. She lived under a false name for 17 years. Her real name Joana Zeferino da Paz was only revealed recently. She passed away in 2024 at the age of 97.

Dona Vitória’s story is not just a local legend. It’s a story of extraordinary courage. It is the story of one woman’s fight against injustice.
