Have you ever seen a building undergoing a massive makeover? The Mairie du 13e arrondissement is currently experiencing just that. Right before our eyes stands this grand structure a testament to Parisian architecture.

The Mairie du 13e arrondissement isn’t just any town hall. It’s a significant part of Paris’s history. Originally built in 1860 it’s seen the city evolve around it. This building which comprises four sections reflects different architectural styles. The main building on Place d’Italie boasts a neoclassical design thanks to architect Paul-Emile Bonnet a Grand Prix de Rome winner. The wings located along Boulevard de l’Hôpital and Avenue des Gobelins display a more Republican style reminiscent of schools fire stations and theaters of the era.

But this venerable building wasn’t always so pristine. Its stone facade suffered considerably over the years. Pollution freezing temperatures and fluctuating weather took their toll. This is why the town hall is currently covered in scaffolding. The last major facade restoration was back in 1988 more than 30 years ago.

The renovation is extensive. Workers are cleaning the stonework replacing gutters and repairing metalwork. Even the roof is receiving attention. A local resident Adèle expressed her surprise seeing the Mairie hidden behind scaffolding. She commented on the dust it created. The renovation is a significant undertaking. It involves cleaning the stone extensively changing some gutters repairing metal parts and repainting window frames. The cost remains undisclosed but is funded by the city of Paris. The city hopes to highlight its architectural heritage.

This renovation isn’t just about restoring the building. Mayor Jérôme Coumet is thrilled about the transformation of Place d’Italie itself. The renovations of the town hall coupled with the changes to the square the large screen and the expansion of the Italie 2 shopping center promise a renewed face for this part of the 13th arrondissement. The renovated Mairie du 13e arrondissement will soon stand proud once again. A symbol of Parisian resilience and architectural beauty.
