Ever wondered what could have been? Right here in La Défense stood the planned Phare Tower. This wasn’t just any skyscraper. This was meant to be Paris’s tallest a beacon a Phare.
Designed by Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architects the Phare Tower was envisioned as a 300-meter-tall marvel. Seventy-one floors would have housed offices restaurants and even a public viewing deck. It would have been a symbol of modern Paris an architectural statement unlike any other.
Imagine the sleek lines the green building design. The Phare Tower wasn’t merely about height. It aimed for sustainability. It was supposed to harness sun and wind for energy. Smart design for a smart city. The plan included a high-performance skin changing opacity throughout the day. At night ribbons of light would dance across its form.
But the Phare Tower remained a dream. The project was cancelled in 2015. The ambitious design was unfortunately deemed too expensive and complex. This ambitious architectural vision was replaced by a more modest development called Sister Towers.
Though it never pierced the Parisian sky the Phare Tower lives on in architectural renderings and discussions. It serves as a reminder of what could have been a symbol of Paris’s ambition and forward-thinking spirit. A testament to the vision of a city reaching for the sky. A true Phare a lighthouse for the future.
