Hidden in plain sight, Square Jussieu is a triangular oasis nestled along the Rhône. It’s more than just a green space. It’s a living tribute to a family of botanical pioneers. The square sits at the meeting point of Quai Augagneur and Cours de la Liberté. It offers stunning views of Lyon’s landmarks. These include the Hôtel Dieu, Fourvière, and the Croix Rousse hill. Square Jussieu is named after Bernard de Jussieu. He was born in Lyon in 1699. He is less famous than his nephew Antoine Laurent de Jussieu, whose name graces a Parisian university. Bernard dedicated his life to the study of plants. He even rivaled Carl Linnaeus in his attempts to classify them. A proud statue of Bernard, three meters tall, stands within the square. It was sculpted by Pierre Aubert and unveiled in 1894. Originally, the square was named Square Lafayette. After the statue’s installation, it was renamed to honor Jussieu. The square itself started as an unused plot of land, deemed too narrow for building. Over time, it evolved. It was transformed into a tranquil park. It was significantly renovated around 2002. Today, the square features paved areas, lawns, and small magnolias. There are also trellises and a variety of plants. The square offers not only a peaceful escape from the city bustle but also a glimpse into Lyon’s rich botanical history. Bernard wasn’t the only botanist in his family. His brothers Antoine and Joseph also made significant contributions to the field. Antoine directed the Jardin du Roi in Paris. Joseph discovered quinine in Peru. Their father, Laurent, was a pharmacist. The Jussieu family’s legacy is intertwined with the city of Lyon. They left an indelible mark on the scientific world.
