Stepping into the bustling heart of Singapore, let’s uncover the story of The Singapore Buddhist Lodge. This unassuming building on Kim Yam Road holds a rich history, deeply intertwined with the growth of Buddhism in Singapore. The Singapore Buddhist Lodge, founded in 1933, stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and community. Originally known as the Singapore Buddhist Sutra Circulation Center, its initial mission was simple: to promote Buddhism and spread its teachings through the distribution of sacred texts. The lodge officially opened its doors in 1934, thanks to the generosity of around 100 philanthropists. One notable contributor was Lee Choon Seng, whose donation of $1,000 helped lay the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of Singapore’s Buddhist community. Over the years, The Singapore Buddhist Lodge blossomed. Its membership grew, necessitating a move to larger premises on Kim Yam Road in 1946. Just a few years later, the lodge was able to purchase the building outright, fueled by generous donations and a successful fundraising drive. The Singapore Buddhist Lodge continued to evolve, adapting to the changing needs of its community. Fast forward to 2020, The Singapore Buddhist Lodge celebrated its 85th anniversary with a grand unveiling. A new worship hall, complete with a resplendent golden Buddha statue, was opened to the public. This marked a significant milestone in the lodge’s history, representing not just physical expansion but also a continued commitment to its spiritual mission. The construction of the hall and the statue, along with other refurbishment works, totaled over $63 million, a testament to the lodge’s dedication and the generosity of its supporters. The Singapore Buddhist Lodge is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a vibrant hub of activity, offering a sanctuary for spiritual seekers and a place of connection for the community. It has weathered leadership changes and internal challenges, emerging stronger and more resilient each time. The Singapore Buddhist Lodge continues to be a vital part of Singapore’s diverse religious landscape. It stands as a symbol of peace, compassion, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
