A sprawling neighborhood emerged in the 1960s. This is Serramonte. Serramonte stands as a testament to suburban expansion south of San Francisco. Serramonte started as a vision of the Gellert brothers, Fred and Carl. Their Suburban Realty Company transformed a quiet dairy ranch into a bustling community beginning in 1963. Serramonte became a hub of activity. Shopping malls and big box retailers sprang up, catering to the growing population.
Serramonte Center stands as a landmark within Serramonte. This bustling mall opened in 1968 near the intersection of Highway 1 and Interstate 280. The mall became a focal point. Its location formed by Callan, Serramonte, and Junipero Serra Boulevards made it easily accessible. In the 1970s, a large Filipino community embraced Daly City as their home. Serramonte Center, in particular, became a popular gathering place, reflecting the area’s growing diversity.
Serramonte’s story also includes an educational chapter. Serramonte High School opened its doors in 1970. The school quickly grew, becoming one of the largest in Daly City. However, its journey was cut short. Serramonte High closed in 1981, a reminder of the ever-changing landscape of education and community development. Serramonte today is a blend of residential and commercial spaces. It offers a glimpse into the rapid growth of the San Francisco suburbs during the mid-20th century.
