You might be surprised by the history of Bedfont Lakes Country Park. It’s a 72.5-hectare haven of nature, but its transformation from a polluted landfill site to a nature reserve is quite amazing. The park was once part of a farm owned by the Duke of St Albans. He sold it in 1780 to William Sherborn, whose family continued to grow produce for London until the 1920s. Then came a period of gravel extraction, which eventually gave way to the landfill that would leave its mark on the landscape. For over two decades, the land was used as a dumping ground for domestic and industrial waste. The polluted lakes were a sad reminder of that era. But in 1988, the Rutland Group, a property company, bought the land, and, to their credit, decided to transform it into a nature reserve. They partnered with Hounslow Council to build the country park, and after managing the park for three years, they generously donated it to the South West London community. The gift included a fund to ensure its upkeep in perpetuity. Since 2000, Bedfont Lakes Country Park has proudly held nature reserve status, winning awards such as the Millennium Marque and the London in Bloom Wildflower and Environment Trophy. It’s now a sanctuary of lakes, wetlands, wildflower meadows, and woodlands. Today, visitors can explore the park’s network of paths and admire the diverse array of plants, birds, insects, and mammals that now thrive there. It’s a reminder that even a blighted landscape can be given a second chance, transforming it into a vibrant and cherished green space.
