Langkær Gymnasium og HF, established in 1975 in Tilst, west of Aarhus, has been a hub of learning and growth for generations of students. Designed by the renowned architectural firm Friis & Moltke, the buildings themselves exude a sense of modern elegance and functionality. Langkær Gymnasium og HF has always been more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a place where young minds have come to explore their potential, from the traditional studentereksamen (STX) and the higher forberedelseseksamen (HF) to the internationally recognized IB Diploma Programme, offered since 2011. Imagine walking these halls alongside figures like Søren Sko, the famous singer and composer, who graduated in 1982, or author and debater Kasper Støvring, class of ’93. Perhaps you’d cross paths with a future politician, like Rabih Azad-Ahmad, or a future leader of the Danske Gymnasieelevers Sammenslutning, like Jens Philip Yazdani. Langkær Gymnasium og HF’s commitment to education extended beyond the traditional curriculum. The school was known for its innovative and experimental teaching practices, fostering a dynamic learning environment. The school even housed the IB Diploma Programme for Aarhus, after winning a bid against the much older Aarhus Katedralskole. This brought an international flair to Langkær, with teachers from around the world collaborating with their Danish counterparts. Langkær Gymnasium og HF wasn’t without its challenges. In 2016, the school became the center of a national debate due to its policy of dividing some first-year students based on ethnicity. This controversial measure, taken to address an uneven student composition, was deemed “the least bad solution” by both the student council chairman and the principal at the time. This period highlighted the complexities of integration and diversity within the Danish education system, a challenge Langkær Gymnasium og HF faced head-on. Today, Langkær Gymnasium og HF is no longer a separate entity. It merged with Aarhus Tech in 2018, becoming Aarhus Gymnasium, Tilst.
