Picture the imposing façade of Saint Joseph Catholic Church. Its Art Deco style stands proudly on Capitol Hill. This isn’t just any church. It’s a Seattle landmark. Designated in 1980 Saint Joseph’s boasts a rich history.

The original Saint Joseph Church was a simple wooden structure built in 1907. It quickly proved too small for the growing congregation. A larger church was needed. The current church’s construction began in 1918. Donations from many families helped fund this ambitious project.

Initially the plan was for an early Gothic masterpiece. Think New York’s St Patrick’s Cathedral but grander. The Great Depression changed everything. Granite and marble were too expensive. Reinforced concrete became the innovative solution. This modern material significantly reduced costs.

The architect Abraham H Albertson masterfully blended old and new. He designed the Seattle Tower the Montlake Bridge and many other Seattle icons. Saint Joseph’s Church was completed in 1929 and dedicated to Christ the King in 1930.

This magnificent church is 250 feet long 110 feet wide and ten stories high at its peak. The bell tower reaches an impressive 225 feet. For many years it was Seattle’s highest geodetic point. Its mass is best viewed from 19th Avenue. There you see the walls modulated by flat buttresses. These support the considerable weight.

Step inside Saint Joseph’s. The interior is breathtaking. A huge glass mosaic altarpiece of Christ the King dominates the sanctuary. Notice the innovative surface-painted pillars and archways. The floor slopes gently towards the sanctuary improving acoustics. The church is even used for concerts.

Examine the stonework above the entrance doors. The words Domus Dei House of God greet all who enter. Above are the names and emblems of the twelve apostles in terra cotta relief. Each apostle’s symbol is significant. St Thomas is represented by a right angle a carpenter’s square. St Bartholomew is represented by three knives relating to his martyrdom. These details add depth to the architectural experience.

The great copper doors are adorned with fleur-de-lis and star-shaped crosses. The six bells in the tower include George the largest weighing over 1300 pounds.

Saint Joseph’s Church is more than a place of worship. It’s a testament to faith community and architectural ingenuity. It’s a Seattle treasure a place to pause reflect and feel the weight of history. It’s a story written in stone glass and the hearts of the community. A lasting legacy on Capitol Hill.
