Nestled within eight acres of bushland in Croydon North, Melbourne, Village School isn’t your typical primary school. Village School has fostered a unique learning environment since 1982. It was founded by three teachers: Carol Glover, Lola Hill, and Trevor Stacey. They envisioned a school that celebrated individual differences and encouraged students to become resourceful and independent learners. Village School embraces a democratic philosophy, allowing students to have a voice in the running of their school alongside their teachers. This principle stems from the educational aims of J.S. Bruner, who believed any subject could be taught effectively to any child at any stage of development. Originally located in Ringwood on land leased from Penguin Books Australia, Village School relocated to its current site on Holloway Road in 1985. The move provided the school with much-needed space for growth and expansion. Over the years, Village School has seen various building projects. These projects include the refurbishment of portable classrooms with asthma-friendly materials, the addition of hexagonal classrooms, and the construction of a new school office and boardroom. The school also has a rich history of incorporating animals into its learning environment. From horses and chickens to goats and even a rescued calf, Village School has provided students with unique hands-on experiences. These experiences teach them about animal care, responsibility, and the importance of respecting all living creatures. Village School continues its commitment to fostering a caring community where lifelong learning thrives. Here, students learn at their own pace in a supportive environment. They develop a love of learning and essential skills for future success.
