Engraved in the heart of Jember, Masjid Jami Al Baitul Amien stands as a unique testament to faith and community. The current Masjid Jami Al Baitul Amien isn’t the original structure. It rests across from the older masjid, now a primary school under the Yayasan Al Baitul Amien. While the exact origins of the first masjid are shrouded in mystery, Dutch records show it occupying land designated as ‘eigendom verpoding number 981’ as far back as December 19, 1894. This plot spanned 2,760 square meters. The older masjid underwent renovations in 1939, a testament to the community’s dedication. A fascinating tale surrounds the old Masjid Jami Al Baitul Amien. Soewarno Soetopamekas, a prominent figure in local government, spearheaded a unique renovation project. He rallied the community to collect soy sauce bottles. These bottles were sold, and the proceeds funded the mosque’s improvements. This resourcefulness speaks volumes about the community spirit surrounding Masjid Jami Al Baitul Amien. The spirit of community collaboration continued with the construction of the new Masjid Jami Al Baitul Amien. During Bupati Abdul Hadi’s administration (1973-1978), a new mosque was envisioned. It would be situated opposite the old one on Jalan Raya Sultan Agung. The design, remarkably reminiscent of the MPR/DPR building in Jakarta, was the brainchild of Yaying K. Kesser, a California-educated architect. The community once again rallied. They contributed 11,000 tons of harvested rice. This donation translated into a substantial 518 million rupiah, funding the mosque’s completion. The new Masjid Jami Al Baitul Amien was inaugurated on May 3, 1976. Today, prayers resonate within the new Masjid Jami Al Baitul Amien, its distinctive dome and minaret gracing Jember’s skyline. The old masjid continues to serve the community, now nurturing young minds within its historic walls. Masjid Jami Al Baitul Amien’s journey through time highlights the enduring power of faith and community.
