Rose petals unfurl in my mind’s eye. We are standing before the Chapelle de la Roseraie. This chapel is nestled within the Roseraie du Val-de-Marne. The Val-de-Marne rose garden is near Paris in L’Haÿ-les-Roses.

The Chapelle de la Roseraie stands as a testament to a bygone era. It is a relic from the original park design. The park was conceived by Jules Gravereaux. He was the founder of this rose garden.

Jules Gravereaux created the Roseraie du Val-de-Marne. He started collecting roses in 1892. He then hired landscape architect Édouard André. André showcased the rose collections. Together they created a garden dedicated to the queen of flowers.

The Roseraie du Val-de-Marne became a new style of garden art. Roses were the sole element of vegetal decoration. The park included several structures. Today only the Chapelle de la Roseraie and the museum remain. A chalet and a theater are gone.

The Val-de-Marne rose garden changed hands over time. The department of the Seine acquired it in 1936. In 1968, it was transferred to the department of Val-de-Marne. It was renamed Roseraie du Val-de-Marne.

The Chapelle du parc de la Roseraie du Val-de-Marne stands quietly. It is a reminder of the garden’s history.

Jules Gravereaux amassed over 8,000 species and varieties of roses. Today, nearly 3,200 varieties make up 13 collections. They include wild roses and roses from around the world. Over 13,000 rose bushes are presented.

The Roseraie du Val-de-Marne has earned recognition. It was named a national collection of old roses. It also received the Award of Garden Excellence.

The garden is listed as a historical monument since 2005. It also has the “Remarkable Garden” label.

Imagine this chapel during the garden’s golden age. It was a place for quiet contemplation amidst the roses.

Although now deconsecrated, the Chapelle de la Roseraie remains. It is a picturesque element of the landscape. It is a link to the past.

The Chapelle de la Roseraie stands as a silent witness. It has seen the garden evolve. It has seen roses bloom and fade. Its presence enriches the Roseraie du Val-de-Marne.
