Hidden behind formidable walls, the Vár, or Buda Castle, has witnessed centuries of Hungarian history. The Vár is more than just a castle. It’s a sprawling complex of palaces, churches, museums, and charming streets, perched atop Castle Hill. After the Mongols ravaged Buda in 1242, King Béla IV sought refuge on this easily defensible hill, establishing the first royal residence within the Vár. The Vár became a magnet, drawing residents and shaping the city’s destiny. By the 14th century, Buda boasted a population of 8,000. The Vár has endured numerous sieges, including a devastating Turkish occupation from 1541 to 1686. This occupation left the Vár in ruins. Austrian authorities counted a mere 300 survivors. The Vár also faced attacks in 1849 and 1945. In 1945, German troops held out for nearly a month during the city’s thirty-first siege. From the opulent Royal Palace to the iconic Matthias Church, the Vár reflects a rich tapestry of architectural styles. The Royal Palace, initially a Gothic structure, underwent Baroque transformations and extensive neo-Baroque renovations in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It now houses the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum’s Castle Museum. The Matthias Church, with its distinctive rococo spire, stands as a testament to Gothic architecture and houses a replica of St. Stephen’s Crown. Take a stroll along the Fisherman’s Bastion. Its neo-Romanesque towers and terraces offer breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The Vár became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. The Vár, or Castle Quarter, comprises three main sections: the Buda Castle Palace, the area around St. George’s Square, and the historic residential district.
