Whispers of faith echo through the years here at Gereja Katolik Paroki St. Fransiskus Xaverius. This Catholic parish church, nestled in North Jakarta, Indonesia, carries a rich history intertwined with the growth of the local community. Gereja Katolik Paroki St. Fransiskus Xaverius stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the faithful. The church’s story begins long before its physical structure graced this site. Initially, Catholics in the Tanjung Priok area were part of the Cathedral Parish. In 1938, they became part of the newly established Mangga Besar Parish. The first dedicated space for worship in Tanjung Priok arrived in 1947, a temporary church on Jalan Ambon, affectionately known as the Port Church, served by Jesuit priests. A significant step towards the establishment of Gereja Katolik Paroki St. Fransiskus Xaverius occurred in 1965. A chapel, Kapel Maria Bintang Laut (Star of the Sea Chapel), was built in Warakas by Father Rudolphus Kurris. Then, a pivotal moment arrived in 1966. Admiral Haryono Nimpuno, Commander of the Third Maritime Command, granted land on Jalan Yos Sudarso, facing Jalan Melati, for a new church. Construction of Gereja Katolik Paroki St. Fransiskus Xaverius began on October 11, 1969, and culminated in its consecration on December 3, 1970. The church’s name honors St. Francis Xavier, a renowned missionary who brought Christianity to Indonesia. Since 1998, the pastoral care of Gereja Katolik Paroki St. Fransiskus Xaverius has been entrusted to the Congregation of the Mission. The church’s interior reflects both its dedication to faith and its connection to local tradition. Statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin Mary grace the sanctuary. A statue of St. Francis Xavier, the church’s patron saint, stands as a reminder of his missionary work. Outside, in the courtyard, another statue of St. Francis Xavier accompanies a bell tower, their presence a constant reminder of the church’s role in the community. Gereja Katolik Paroki St. Fransiskus Xaverius serves its community with daily morning masses and weekly masses on Saturday evenings and Sundays. The church continues to be a spiritual anchor in the Tanjung Priok area, offering a space for worship, community, and connection to a faith that spans centuries.
