From a school for publicans’ children to the headquarters of NAAFI, Imperial Court has lived many lives. Right here on Kennington Lane, this neo-Classical building stands as a testament to London’s ever-evolving history. Imperial Court began its journey in 1836 as the Licensed Victuallers’ School. Built to educate children of publicans facing hardship, it replaced a smaller school dating back to 1794. The school offered education and apprenticeships, nurturing pupils from ages 7-12 until they reached 15. In 1921, the school relocated to Slough, leaving Imperial Court ready for its next chapter. Following World War I, the building became the headquarters for the Navy, Army, and Air Forces Institutes, better known as NAAFI. From 1921 to 1992, Imperial Court buzzed with activity as NAAFI trained staff to provide essential services to British armed forces and their families overseas. Think cooks, cleaners, caterers, and logisticians, many of them women, contributing to the war effort behind the scenes. Their work is even celebrated at the nearby Imperial War Museum. Today, Imperial Court has transitioned once more. Converted into flats after its sale in 1992, it now provides homes for Londoners. This Grade II* listed building, thankfully safe from demolition, continues to contribute to the vibrant tapestry of Kennington Lane.
