Gazing across the vast expanse of the Kocaeli Peninsula, one can almost feel the weight of history. This peninsula, also known as Kocaeli Yarımadası, separates the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. It stands as a silent witness to the passage of countless civilizations. The Kocaeli Peninsula cradles a significant portion of Istanbul, one of the world’s most bustling cities, on its western side. On its easternmost point lies İzmit, another major city. The peninsula stretches westward for about 90 kilometers, with an average width of around 40 kilometers. The Bosphorus, a vital waterway connecting Europe and Asia, defines its western boundary. This strategic location has made the Kocaeli Peninsula a crucial pathway for migrations throughout history, from the ancient Phrygians, Bithynians, and Galatians to more recent times. The Bithynians held sway over this region for an extended period. The Kocaeli Peninsula also holds the distinction of being the final resting place of Hannibal, the renowned Carthaginian commander. He sought refuge in Bithynia and died on the peninsula around 182 BC. His tomb is believed to be located near either Dilovası or Gebze, both situated in the central part of the Kocaeli Peninsula. Over the centuries, the peninsula has been a part of several empires. The Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, and the Ottoman Empire all left their mark on this land. The Kocaeli Peninsula, known as Mesothynia (meaning “Middle Thynia”) during Byzantine times, thrived with industry and trade. Today, the Kocaeli Peninsula stands as a testament to its rich and layered past. It continues to be a vital region in Turkey, blending ancient history with modern industry. The southern coastline along the Sea of Marmara buzzes with activity, with settlements, factories, and shipyards dotting the landscape, contrasting with the quieter northern coastline along the Black Sea.
