Here stands the oldest public garden in Karlsruhe. This is the Durlacher Schlossgarten. It holds a rich history. It is a vital part of Durlach and Karlsruhe’s urban development. For 450 years, this garden has been the cradle of Karlsruhe’s garden culture.

The Durlacher Schlossgarten is in the town center. It is near the Karlsburg. In summer, this garden becomes a popular spot. Its green spaces invite people to relax. They can linger and enjoy the surroundings.

The park has play areas for children. It offers seating and resting areas. You can see perennial and summer flowers blooming here.

Once, the park reflected early 20th-century designs. The alley and parts of the park walls date back to its early development. Storm damage and a lack of maintenance took their toll. There was a need for modern updates.

In 2008, the Karlsruhe Garden Department developed a plan. It aimed to renew and enhance the park. By 2015, the plan was carefully carried out. As a historically significant site, the park’s design is now clearer. It is a more inviting and versatile place to relax.

The remaining structures from the Baroque period have been refreshed. The added landscape elements create a dynamic interplay. The renovation has opened up exciting possibilities. It allows new spatial qualities and experiences. Key improvements include the renovated fountain. Beech hedges outline the Baroque park structures. Ground-covering plant beds and a curved band of hydrangea add to the beauty.

Let’s step back in time. Markgraf Karl II moved his residence from Pforzheim to Durlach in 1565. He and his successors expanded the old hunting lodge. This became the Karlsburg. Art and culture flourished. A court theater was established.

The Karlsburg survived the Thirty Years’ War. It had no major damage. But the glory of the Durlach residence ended abruptly. On August 16, 1689, French troops set the palace and town on fire. This happened during the Palatinate War of Succession. The vast buildings and grand structures were almost completely destroyed.

By 1715, the western wing of the palace was rebuilt. It included the chapel and stables. However, the court moved to the newly founded Karlsruhe three years later. This ended further expansion plans. The Karlsburg then served as a residence for widows. Later, in the 19th century, it became a barracks.

Today, the Durlach palace houses the Pfinzgau Museum. It also hosts the Badische Konservatorium. The Pfinzgau Museum is in the baroque Karlsburg. It showcases the history of Durlach. Durlach was an independent city until 1938. The museum displays art, culture, social history, and everyday life artifacts.

The museum covers Durlach’s history back to Roman times. Durlach, founded by the Staufer dynasty, was the residence of Baden-Durlach. That lasted from 1565 to 1718. In the 19th century, it became an industrial center.

See the model of the Karlsburg before 1689. Look at the model of the city around 1800. Admire the large collection of Durlach faience from the 18th and early 19th centuries. Explore the documents, paintings, and photos. They illustrate the past of Karlsruhe’s largest district.

The Durlacher Schlossgarten connects the past and present. It offers a space for relaxation and recreation. Take a moment to appreciate the history. Enjoy the beauty of this unique garden.
