Have you ever heard of a school with not one, but two Victoria Cross recipients among its alumni? This, my friends, is George Mitchell School, a place where echoes of extraordinary courage seem to linger in the air. While the original school building might be gone, replaced by modern structures, the spirit of those heroes, once young lads attending classes right here, remains. George Mitchell School was originally known as Farmer Road School, established in 1900. It went through a series of changes over the decades, eventually becoming the co-educational comprehensive school you see today. But the story that truly sets this place apart is that of George Mitchell himself. A former student, he served with extraordinary valor in the Second World War, earning the Victoria Cross for his bravery in the face of enemy fire. He later sacrificed his life, shot by a German soldier even after securing his surrender. In 1957, the school was renamed in his honor. But the story doesn’t end there! Another student, Jack Cornwell, earned the Victoria Cross posthumously for his heroism at the Battle of Jutland during World War I. Imagine, two young men from the same school, both displaying such extraordinary courage in the most harrowing of circumstances. The medals of these heroes were once kept here, tangible reminders of the potential that resides in every student who walks through these doors. They now reside in the London Scottish Regimental Museum, but their legacy continues to inspire generations at George Mitchell School.
