Here we are at Stave Hill. What appears to be a natural hill is actually a man-made marvel. Stave Hill offers amazing views and a unique glimpse into London’s history.

Stave Hill is a 30-foot high artificial mound. It’s shaped like a truncated cone. The hill was created in 1985. It was built by the London Docklands Development Corporation. Waste material and rubble from dock works were used to build it.

At the top of Stave Hill, there is a viewing platform. A relief map of the former docks, made of cast bronze, sits there. This map was created by Michael Rizzello. The map shows what the area looked like when it was full of docks.

From Stave Hill, the views are incredible. You can see Canary Wharf, the City of London, and much of south and central London. On a clear day, you might even spot Wembley Stadium. It is also possible to see Nine Elms and the BT Tower.

Stave Hill is located in Russia Dock Woodland. This woodland was created by infilling former Surrey Commercial Docks. The Russia Dock was used for importing softwood timber. This timber came from Norway, Russia, and Sweden. It was used for newsprint and furniture.

After the docks closed in the 1970s, the area was redeveloped. Russia Dock Woodland was made up of several docks. These included Russia Dock, Island Dock, and Surrey Basin. The docks were infilled in 1980. A 34.5-acre woodland was then planted.

The woodland still has some original dock features. You can see retaining wall capstones. Depth gauges, bollards, mooring chains, and tracks are visible. A narrow stream flows through the woodland. Footbridges and paths allow visitors to explore.

The Conservation Volunteers maintain the nearby Stave Hill Ecological Park. Southwark Council manages the woodlands. The Friends of Russia Dock Woodland assist them.

To get to the top of Stave Hill, you can climb sixty concrete steps. Handrails are available to assist those who need them.

The 3D map at the top is quite remarkable. It shows all the old docks. The map fills with rainwater. This gives it an organic feel.

Stave Hill offers a sharp contrast. The manicured hill stands next to the wilderness of the ecological park.

Stave Hill provides a tranquil escape. It brings much-needed wildlife to the area. It is a great resource for residents and visitors.

So, take a moment to appreciate Stave Hill. It’s a reminder of London’s ever-changing landscape. It is a place where history and nature come together.
