Hidden within the Village Green, resides the Gourd Man Sculpture. This captivating artwork invites you to explore its unique story. The Gourd Man Sculpture was installed in late April 2009. It is the creation of artist Shencheng Xu, a sculptor who blends Eastern and Western artistic traditions. The Gourd Man Sculpture is one of two sculptures chosen and purchased by the Village of Skokie PAAC for the Village Green. Located between Skokie Village Hall and the Skokie Public Library, the Gourd Man Sculpture shares this space with another notable artwork, “The Glowing of Such Fire” by Richard Taylor. Shencheng Xu, the artist behind Gourd Man, has a passion for incorporating the human form into his work. He views the human figure as a constant source of inspiration, seeing endless possibilities within its form. Xu has created a number of other public sculptures. Some of his other works can be found in places like Lincoln Park, Oak Park, and even at Northeastern Illinois University where he teaches. The Gourd Man Sculpture isn’t just a piece of art; it’s a testament to the power of human creativity and the fusion of cultures. As you admire its form, consider the journey of its creator and the message it conveys about the interconnectedness of art and life.
