Surely, there’s a story to be told about The Royal Marsden Hospital. The Royal Marsden stands as a beacon of hope in the ongoing battle against cancer. The Royal Marsden was founded in 1851 by William Marsden. He was deeply moved by his wife’s death from cancer.

Marsden’s vision was clear. He wanted to classify tumors. He wanted to research the causes and find new treatments. The Royal Marsden began as a dispensary in Westminster. It offered palliative treatments to outpatients. The need for inpatient care quickly became obvious.

The Royal Marsden moved to Fulham Road in Chelsea in 1862. This was into a custom-built building. A second, larger hospital opened in Sutton in 1963. This expansion reflected the growing need for specialized cancer treatment.

Close ties between research and care defined The Royal Marsden. The Cancer Hospital Research Institute was established in 1909. It later evolved into the Institute of Cancer Research. This proximity has allowed The Royal Marsden to translate research into patient care. New cancer drugs and techniques in imaging were developed here.

The Royal Marsden received its royal charter in 1910. It became known as The Cancer Hospital. King Edward VIII later added the word ‘Royal’. In 1954, it was renamed The Royal Marsden Hospital. This was in honor of its founder’s vision.

The Royal Marsden became part of the National Health Service in 1948. It was designated a post-graduate teaching hospital. The Sutton branch of The Royal Marsden opened in 1962. It was built on the site of the former Banstead Road branch of the South Metropolitan District School.

In 2008, a fire broke out in the Chelsea Wing of The Royal Marsden. Staff and patients were evacuated safely. The hospital quickly recovered and continued its work.

William Ernest Miles, a surgeon was appointed to The Royal Marsden in 1899. Thomas Horder became the hospital’s first physician in 1908. David Waldron Smithers established the Surrey branch of The Royal Marsden. Julian Bloom is honored with The Royal Marsden’s main lecture theatre named after him.

The Royal Marsden continues to be at the forefront of cancer care today. It treats over 50,000 people annually. It operates as an NHS Foundation Trust since 2004. The Royal Marsden balances NHS services with private patient care. This allows it to generate additional income for research and development.

As we stand here, consider the countless lives touched by The Royal Marsden. The Royal Marsden remains a symbol of hope and progress in the fight against cancer. Its history is a testament to the power of vision. Its dedication is a proof of compassion.
