North of the bustling city of Chicago, on the shores of Lake Michigan, stands the Grosse Point Lighthouse. What appears as a beacon of peace and tranquility today, was once a silent witness to tragedy and a symbol of hope. The Grosse Point Lighthouse wasn’t always here. Its story began with the tragic sinking of the Lady Elgin in 1860. The Lady Elgin, a passenger steamer carrying Irish Union Guards, collided with a schooner just off the coast where the lighthouse now stands. Over 300 souls perished in the icy waters, making it the worst maritime disaster on the Great Lakes. This tragedy, along with several other shipwrecks in the area, highlighted the urgent need for a lighthouse. The citizens of Evanston, heartbroken and determined, petitioned Congress, but their pleas were initially drowned out by the roar of the Civil War. Finally, in 1871, their voices were heard, and construction of the Grosse Point Lighthouse was authorized. Completed in 1873 and first lit in 1874, the lighthouse stood as a testament to resilience and a beacon of safety for ships navigating the treacherous waters. The Grosse Point Lighthouse boasts a unique feature, a magnificent second-order Fresnel Lens. This lens, the largest of its kind on the Great Lakes, could project its powerful beam a staggering 20 miles, guiding ships safely into the Chicago Harbor. Today, the Grosse Point Lighthouse stands not just as a guardian of the shoreline, but also as a monument to the past. It whispers tales of bravery, loss, and the enduring spirit of a community. As you gaze upon its strong silhouette against the vast expanse of Lake Michigan, remember the lives it has touched and the countless voyages it has guided home.
