“Was Charles Gounod a Parisian?” I ask you. You’re standing with me now before Avenue Gounod. It’s a quiet street. Not flashy like the Champs-Élysées. But it holds a story. A story about one of France’s most beloved composers.

Avenue Gounod is named after Charles Gounod. He was born in Paris in 1818. His family was artistic. His mother was a talented pianist. His father a painter. Gounod studied at the Conservatoire de Paris. He won the prestigious Prix de Rome. This prize funded his studies in Italy Austria and Prussia. There he met Felix Mendelssohn.

Imagine a young Gounod. He was deeply religious. He nearly became a priest. But his passion was music. He wrote operas. His most famous opera is Faust. It’s still performed internationally. Another of his operas Romeo et Juliette is also a classic. It’s been a favourite for many years.

But Gounod wrote more than operas. He composed church music. He wrote songs. Some of his pieces are still loved today. His Ave Maria is a beautiful example. It’s an elaboration of a Bach piece. His Funeral March of a Marionette is equally well-known.

His life wasn’t always easy. The Franco-Prussian War interrupted his career. He and his family fled to England for safety. He lived in London for several years. He even directed the Royal Albert Hall Choral Society. This was renamed the Royal Choral Society later.

Gounod’s absence from France affected his career. Younger composers were gaining prominence. He was seen as old-fashioned. He returned to Paris. He continued to compose. He wrote religious works. La Rédemption and Mors et vita are among his oratorios. These became popular internationally.

Gounod died in 1893. He was 75 years old. He had a state funeral at L’Église de la Madeleine. His works are still appreciated. His melodies. His harmonies. His passion. All are part of Avenue Gounod’s legacy. So next time you stroll this Parisian street remember the man it celebrates. Remember Charles Gounod and his enduring musical gifts.
