A bell rings out. That’s the bell A.P. Møller and his wife’s foundation gifted to Sundkirken. We’re standing before Sundkirken on Amager. It is more than just a building. Sundkirken is a place of history and community.

Sundkirken’s story began before this building even existed. The area once belonged to Filipskirke. In 1942 Filipskirke hired an assistant priest. The priest was to care for the northern part of the parish. A barrack church was erected in 1943. It was named Kirken ved Sundet. The parish of Sundkirken was established in 1945. The name changed to Sundkirken then.

A collection started to build a more permanent church. The necessary capital was raised with the Church Foundation. Construction began where the barrack church stood. Sundkirken could be used in 1956.

G. H. Christiansen was the architect behind Sundkirken. He created a space for worship. Christiansen designed a beautiful and functional building.

In 2004 and 2005 Sundkirken underwent extensive renovations. The renovation created a brighter church room.

Sundkirken stands on Lodivej. Its address is Lodivej 9, 2300 Copenhagen. Sundkirken belongs to the parish of Sundkirken. It is part of the Allehelgens-Sundkirkens Pastorat. The deanery is Amagerbro. Sundkirken is in the Diocese of Copenhagen. It is part of Copenhagen Municipality.

Sundkirken is more than bricks and mortar. It is a vibrant part of the community. It is a place for many activities. Sundkirken offers evening prayers and debates. There are activities for children and young people. These include children’s services and babysalmesang. Other activities include meditation, yoga, and mini-pilgrimages. Sundkirken hosts film clubs and Whist players.

Sundkirken shares a vision with Allehelgens Kirke. It provides a space for worship and community. The church also offers practical information. They offer guidance on christenings and confirmations. Sundkirken assists with weddings and funerals.

As we conclude our visit take a moment. Remember the journey of Sundkirken. From a barrack church to this building. Sundkirken is still evolving. It is a testament to faith and community.
