Look at this majestic Lake Travis, though. Built in 1941, Mansfield Dam was the answer to the community’s prayers. To control the raging waters and protect the people living around the river, the Lower Colorado River Authority built six dams, creating the Texas Highland Lakes, One of these dams, the Mansfield Dam, created Lake Travis. It not only protects communities from flooding but also provides crucial water for drinking, recreation, and even hydroelectric power. In fact, the lake’s water level can vary dramatically, from an impressive 216 meters above sea level to a drastic 187 meters. This reflects how the lake acts as a safety net for the area, keeping the community protected during both droughts and floods.
