Wow. Look at Tank Shanghai. Five gigantic aviation fuel tanks. They once served Shanghai Longhua Airport one of China’s first airports.
Imagine these colossal structures abandoned. Forgotten relics of a bygone era. They stood silent witnesses to the city’s transformation. This was until 2019. That’s when OPEN Architecture breathed new life into them.
Tank Shanghai isn’t just a museum. It’s a vibrant art center a public park all rolled into one. The five tanks now house galleries cafes and more. Three are connected as exhibition spaces. Others support the center’s activities.
The architects cleverly integrated the tanks with the surrounding landscape. Long sloping meadows connect the tanks. They offer open access to the Huangpu River. Visitors can stroll freely between city nature and art. This was a deliberate design choice. It rejects conventional ideas about what a museum should be. Tank Shanghai is inclusive accessible. It’s a sanctuary for people and nature.
The Super-Surface a five-hectare landscaped area is the project’s heart. It connects the five tanks. The designers skillfully merged architecture and landscape. This creates a unique flow between indoor and outdoor spaces. You can even access some galleries from below. The Super-Surface also restores public access to the Huangpu Riverfront. This was previously inaccessible.
Each tank has its own unique character. Tank 1 now hosts live music its interior specially designed for acoustics. Tank 2 is a restaurant with a roof deck. Tank 3 keeps its original industrial aesthetic. Its high domed ceiling is perfect for large art installations. Tank 4 has a three-level cube for traditional gallery spaces. Tank 5 boasts two stages.
Beyond the main tanks are smaller galleries. One reflects the surrounding greenery. Another offers versatile space for different events. The site includes freely accessible public art installations.
