What echoes do you hear when you stand before this seemingly ordinary field? This is no ordinary place. This is the site of Hof Kapelle. Though the original structure is gone its story remains.

Hof Kapelle’s roots reach far back into Bremen’s history. Once upon a time a chapel stood here. A document from 1336 mentions this chapel. Legend says its bell lies buried in a nearby ditch.

Let’s journey to a dark night in November 1945. The Flothmeier and Hamelmann families lived here. Suddenly armed men stormed the farm. They were young Polish men. They were likely former forced laborers.

Wilhelm Hamelmann survived the attack. He was severely wounded. He told police the attackers were young Polish men. They had guns.

Hamelmann recalled the leader closing the cellar window. He knew what would follow: a shooting. Hamelmann tried to shield his family. The shot missed his head. It hit his lung.

The police searched a camp for former forced laborers. It was in Gröpelingen. They found items from Hof Kapelle. Several men were arrested. Hamelmann identified the attackers. This happened in the hospital.

Eight Poles stood before an American military court. This occurred in February. Evidence was limited. The murder weapons vanished. The alleged leader was missing. Four received death sentences. Three got life sentences. One received 40 years.

But the story of Hof Kapelle doesn’t end there. Years later Hamelmann learned three attackers remained imprisoned. Despite their pardons, they were still incarcerated. He contacted them. He sought their release.

Helmut Dachale is a journalist. He researched Hamelmann’s background. Dachale discovered Hamelmann had ties to the KPD. He might have been a member. Hamelmann worked with the Bremen resistance. They aided escaped forced laborers and prisoners of war.

In 1997 the old Hof Kapelle was torn down. Now nothing marks the spot. Yet the story of Hof Kapelle lingers. It speaks of tragedy. It speaks of forgiveness. It reminds us of a dark chapter. It also shows the capacity for compassion.
