Over 400 family mausoleums stand silent. This is Mount Carmel Cemetery. We’re standing before one of Chicago’s oldest Catholic cemeteries. It’s located in Hillside a west suburban town. It’s right across the street from Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Mount Carmel is significant. It’s the oldest Catholic cemetery in the western part of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Most of those buried here are Italian. Italian traditions are deeply rooted here. You’ll see statuary photographs and elaborate private mausoleums.

This is more than just a cemetery. It’s a repository of history. Mount Carmel holds the remains of over 226275 people. About 800 more are interred annually. This place reflects the rich cultural heritage of Chicago’s Italian-American community. The meticulous monuments are testaments to their enduring faith and family values.

The Bishops’ Mausoleum is a major attraction. It’s received thousands of visitors. It’s the final resting place for Chicago’s Archbishops and Bishops. Cardinal Joseph Bernardin is buried there. His interment in 1996 drew over 50000 visitors in just two months.

But Mount Carmel is also famous for another reason. It’s the final resting place of infamous 1920s gangsters. Al Capone is the most notorious one buried here. His grave is a stark reminder of a different era in Chicago’s history.

Notice the intricate details on the headstones and monuments. Many feature statues and engravings of religious figures. Many tombstones even contain photographs of those buried beneath.

Beyond Al Capone other notable mobsters rest here. Sam Giancana Frank Nitti and Dean O’Banion are some names. Their presence adds a layer of intrigue to this already captivating place. Mount Carmel Cemetery isn’t just a place of quiet reflection. It’s a living tapestry woven from faith history and a touch of infamy.
