Founded in 1817 Homerton Baptist Church stands proudly in Barnabas Road. It’s a place steeped in history a testament to faith and community. Initially known as Homerton Row Chapel this church has witnessed significant changes over the centuries. It moved to its present location. The church played a vital role in the lives of many Homerton residents. It served as a cornerstone of the community.
The original building was erected in 1822 after securing a site in Homerton Row. The church was registered that year. In 1871 it joined the Metropolitan Association of Strict Baptist Churches. Its name then changed to Homerton Row Baptist Chapel. Times changed. In 1962 a compulsory purchase order resulted in the redevelopment of the area. The church’s original site was lost to the expansion of Homerton Row School. This school later became Upton House Comprehensive School. Then in 2009 it transformed into City Academy Hackney.
Through these upheavals Homerton Baptist Church persevered. In the late 1990s it adopted its current name Homerton Baptist Church. This reflected its enduring connection to the neighbourhood. In June 2016 the local authority granted planning permission for a new building. The redevelopment project culminated in 2018. A modern building opened containing both a church sanctuary and 24 apartments. The new Homerton Baptist Church combines its historic roots with a vision for the future.
Today Homerton Baptist Church remains an active part of the community. It is an Independent Grace Baptist Church self-governing and affiliated with the Association of Grace Baptist Churches South-East. The church continues to offer a place of worship and community support for people of all backgrounds. The church is registered as a Place of Worship and holds charity status. This allows it to accept income under the Gift Aid Scheme. Conveniently located near Homerton railway station the church is accessible by London Overground trains. Bus routes also pass nearby. Although the church has no on-site parking ample parking is available on Sundays in nearby streets. During the week parking restrictions apply to local residents only.
