Granite whispers tales of national importance here at Rigsdagsgården. This square on Slotsholmen in Copenhagen links history and modern democracy. Rigsdagsgården sits between Christiansborg Palace and Frederik the Third’s art chamber building. Until 2020, the latter housed the National Archives.

From Rigsdagsgården, one can enter the Folketing’s rooms in Christiansborg. You can also access the Royal Library Garden. But there is even more to discover about Rigsdagsgården.

Imagine a time when cars drove freely across this square. That changed on April 22, 2013. Concerns about potential terrorist attacks led to a ban on vehicle traffic.

Now, let’s talk about the square’s renewal. In 2009, LYTT Architecture enhanced accessibility. They added a new staircase and level visitor entrance for wheelchair users. This gave the Danish Parliament a worthy main entrance.

The staircase has a timeless design. It complements the historic architecture. The semicircular staircase replaced an angular one. Its circular shape creates a welcoming arrival to the country’s democratic heart.

Two new entrances of steel and brass flank the stairs. They welcome all citizens, including those using wheelchairs. This staircase might be the most photographed in Denmark. Photographers often use it as a backdrop when politicians arrive at Parliament.

All new pavements are made from Bornholm granite. The pavement uses 90×90 tiles from the Paradise Quarry. These tiles have a sawed and jet-burned surface. Walls and steps consist of Moseløkke and Helletsbakke granite.

This staircase marked the first phase of Rigsdagsgården’s renewal. The long-term plan includes closing it to traffic. The entire courtyard will be covered in granite. The total area covers 5,000 square meters. The cost was 5 million.

Consider the details around you. The Paradise Quarry granite underfoot tells a story. It speaks of careful design. This place promotes accessibility.

Rigsdagsgården is more than a square. It is a symbol of Danish democracy. Its transformation reflects a commitment to inclusivity and security. As you leave Rigsdagsgården, remember its blend of history and progress.
