Imagine stepping back in time. You are now standing before the Zona Arqueológica Poblado de La Atalayita. This remarkable archaeological site on Fuerteventura unveils the secrets of the Mahos. These were the indigenous people who thrived here centuries before the Franco-Norman conquest in the 15th century. La Atalayita isn’t just ruins. It’s a living testament to their ingenuity and resilience.

The site itself is a fascinating reconstruction of this ancient settlement. It showcases the unique homes the Mahos built to survive in the harsh volcanic landscape. Notice the low stone houses. They’re built in the style of dry-stone construction. This means no mortar binds the stones together. Amazingly these structures have endured. Many were even used by shepherds up until a few decades ago.

The most common structures are small dome-shaped buildings. They resemble igloos. Circular or elliptical in shape. They’re just under two meters in diameter and only about a meter and a half high. The entrances are narrow and low. The floors are lower than street level. The ceilings are cleverly crafted false vaults. Large flat stones are carefully placed. Smaller stones fill the gaps creating a surprisingly waterproof seal.

You’ll also see larger structures. These are made up of several rooms opening into a central space. Wider entrances are typical for these homes. Ingeniously the Mahos also used volcanic caves as homes. You can see a clear example of this integration of natural and man-made dwellings here at La Atalayita.

This settlement is known as La Atalayita because of a nearby 90-meter-high elevation. The Mahos used this natural vantage point to watch the coastline. From its peak they could spot approaching boats. Giving them crucial time to raise the alarm.

Why did the Mahos choose this seemingly inhospitable location? The badlands of Pozo Negro might look challenging. But it has some significant advantages. They were only three kilometers from the sea. Providing access to shellfish and fish. Nearby was the Riche-Roche spring a historical water source that still flows today. The rains created good pastures for their goats. A nearby area was suitable for goat shelters. And most remarkably the houses blended seamlessly with the terrain. A natural camouflage. The ravine provided a quick escape route. The Mahos were well adapted to the badlands outpacing enemies in heavier armor.

La Atalayita is more than just an archaeological site. It’s a captivating journey. It’s a place where the past comes alive offering a tangible connection to the resilient and ingenious Mahos of Fuerteventura. So take your time. Explore each dwelling. Imagine the lives lived within these walls. You won’t regret it.
