Rue de la Buire is located in Lyon’s 3rd arrondissement. It is a district bordered by avenue Félix Faure to the north. Cours Gambetta marks its southern boundary. Rue Garibaldi lies to the west and boulevard Vivier-Merle and the railway to the east.
The area of La Buire was once situated between La Part Dieu to the north and the Château de La Mothe to the south. A fortified house still stands at the corner of rues Rachais and Garibaldi. It was built in the second half of the 16th century and transformed in the 18th century.
The lands of the Château de la Buire were divided up in the 19th century. The northern half was transformed into blocks separated by streets in a grid pattern. In the southern part the Chantiers de La Buire were constructed. Tramways used in Lyon in the first half of the 20th century were built here.
The industrial buildings were gradually closed. They were then demolished. Apartment buildings, the Jacob Kaplan Park, and the Aimé Césaire school group now occupy the area. The first phase of the ZAC was completed in 2009. The second phase was finished in 2015.
Before 1852, this area was part of the old suburb of La Guillotière. La Guillotière included all of the current left bank of Lyon. Its boundaries stretched from Vaulx-en-Velin to Vénissieux.
La Buire itself evokes the image of a modern district. But it also has a rich industrial history. The name “Buire” originally belonged to an old manor house. This house still exists. Since 1920 it has served as a student residence. You can find it at 6 rue Rachais. This house is the historical heart of the district.
In the 20th century, the city of Lyon acquired it. It was used as a school for veterans wounded in World War I. Later it became a student residence. The city entrusted it to the CROUS.
The owners of the manor in the 19th century divided its vast land. This allowed for the establishment of numerous industrial workshops and homes.
